Delhi and almost entire country are reeling under intense heat these days. Not many days have passed when Delhi recorded 52.3 degree Celsius, the highest ever maximum temperature. Therefore, it is high time we focussed our attention on the ways we can cope with this unprecedented spell of heat waves and scorching sunlight.

I think there are some ways following which, we can Beat the Heat, such as:

Stay Hydrated: Carry a refillable water bottle wherever you go. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and more if you’re spending time outdoors. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly in hot weather, so sip water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Wear Light Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing. Light colors reflect sunlight, while loose-fitting garments allow air to circulate around your body, keeping you cooler.

Seek Shade: When outdoors, try to stay in shaded areas as much as possible. Seek out trees, umbrellas, or canopies to escape the direct sun. If you’re at the beach or park, bring along a portable shade structure like a beach umbrella or pop-up tent.

Use Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) to exposed skin, even on cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can also provide additional protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Plan Outdoor Activities Wisely: Schedule outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. If you must be outside during peak heat hours, take frequent breaks in shaded areas and avoid strenuous activity.

Cooling Accessories: Consider investing in cooling accessories like a portable fan, cooling towel, or misting spray. These items can provide instant relief by lowering your body temperature.

Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: Both alcohol and caffeine can contribute to dehydration, so try to limit your intake of these beverages, especially when spending time in the heat.

Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness: Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, such as heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat. If you or someone you’re with experiences these symptoms, seek shade, hydrate, and seek medical attention if necessary.

By following these tips, you can beat the heat and stay safe and comfortable during the hottest days of the year. Remember to listen to your body and take breaks as needed to prevent heat-related illnesses. Stay cool and hydrated!
